Anonymous asked: Is kill your darlings a true story?

The story is true, which is just all the more wonderful.

I highly recommend that anyone look into the actual story before seeing the film. The Columbia Years are super interesting, and to top it off, the murder of David Kammerer is just so fascinating.

Lucien Carr was really shadowed by Kammerer, who had worked as a counselor for Carr in the past. Lucien led Kammerer on, even though he was straight. And one night, Lucien- a belligerent drunk- turned on Kammerer one night, stabbing him and throwing the body into the Hudson River. Lucien then went to talk to Burroughs for guidance, and Kerouac to help him bury the evidence. Kerouac and Carr then went to the movies.

Burroughs and Kerouac later wrote the novel “And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks,” loosely based on the murder. Allen tried to do the same thing in a literature course, but the Columbia Administration intervened.
